Car show this Sunday in memory of Mossley drag racer

A car show in aid of Willow Wood Hospice will take place this Sunday, September 1 at Great Academy Ashton.

The 4th Annual Peter ‘Rusty’ Kennedy Memorial Cars and Coffee event runs from 10am-4pm, and will feature dozens of show cars, bikes and military vehicles.

There will also be food and drink stalls, as well as traders selling detailing products.

“This event is for all vehicles; any age/model/make/condition,” says a statement from the organisers. “There are zero vehicle type restrictions so whether you drive a pre-war car, a classic, retro or modern performance car you are welcome.”

“We also welcome bikes, military and commercial vehicles. If you can get the vehicle there legally then you are welcome to show it!”

Prizes will be awarded to:

Best of Show
Best Modified
Best Retro
Best Classic
Best Performance
Best Max Power Car
Best In-Car Audio

The show is in honour of Peter ‘Rusty’ Kennedy - who died in 2020 aged 64 - whose overpowered Ford Capri 4x4 Cosworth, nicknamed ‘WOO', helped make the mechanic from Mossley become one of the most familiar and successful races on the UK drag racing circuit.

WOO starred in a Jeremy Clarkson special DVD, with Vicki Butler-Henderson racing it against Clarkson, who was at the wheel of a Holden HSV and then a £250,000 Brabus Mercedes.

WOO won both sprints at a canter.

Entry to the Great Academy Ashton grounds on Broadoak Road costs £10 per vehicle and £5 for pedestrians, with under-16s free.

It is £20 to sell car-related products on the auto jumble.

All funds raised will go to Willow Wood Hospice in Ashton.
