More knitters needed for “Knitted Scout” project to celebrate 2026 anniversaries
Tameside knitters are busy creating every member of a scouting district entirely from wool.
As previously reported, North Tameside Scouts has launched an ambitious community project to create a knitted Scout for every member in the district ahead of the 2026 anniversaries of the Squirrel, Beaver and Cub sections.
The “Knitted Scout Project” invited volunteers, supporters and craft enthusiasts to help produce handmade knitted and crocheted Scout figures, which will go on display at Linnet Clough Scout Campsite in autumn this year.
The District hopes every member - from Squirrels and Beavers through to Explorers, Young Leaders and adult volunteers - will eventually be represented by a hand crafted figure.
Despite the phenomenal success of the project so far, more help is still needed, specifically to create the scouting leaders in the district.
“We’re on track, which is fantastic,” a District spokesperson said. “But to fully represent every member, we still need more support, especially for our Leaders and Explorer Scouts.”

To encourage participation, North Tameside Scouts has produced a range of knitting and crochet patterns suitable for all skill levels, from experienced crafters to complete beginners.
The project is also expected to expand through collaboration with neighbouring Tame Valley District Scouts, helping create an even larger display while strengthening links between the two districts.
The finished display at Linnet Clough will celebrate not only the anniversaries of the younger Scout sections, but also the contribution made by volunteers and young people across the district.
The scale of the project reflects the continued growth and vibrancy of the district. North Tameside Scouts currently supports members across all sections, including Squirrel Scouts (aged 4–6), Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Young Leaders, and adult volunteers.
Organisers say the project is designed to celebrate Scouting while bringing people together across the generations through traditional crafts like knitting and crochet.
North Tameside Scouts is encouraging anyone interested in helping to come forward, whether by making one knitted Scout or several.
