Ashton United Football Clubs ground played host to a special Children in Need event today, Wednesday 5th November, as BBC Radio Manchester presenters Joe McGrath and Simone Riley stopped off in Ashton-under-Lyne as part of The Thousand Mile Challenge.
The nationwide fundraising effort saw BBC teams collectively travel 1,000 miles, and Joe and Simone took on their leg of the challenge in memorable fashion, walking 25 miles three-legged. Their route took them from Oldham to Ashton Town Centre, with a key stop at Ashton United’s historic ground.
The pair arrived at Hurst Cross at around 2pm, spending an hour completing laps of the pitch and carrying out interviews.
Supporting the occasion, Ashton United welcomed fans and members of the local community who turned out to cheer Joe and Simone on their way. The club’s mascot, Rocky the Robin, was also in attendance to greet Pudsey Bear, helping create a lively and warm atmosphere.
The Crossbar was open throughout the afternoon, providing refreshments as supporters gathered to celebrate the visit and show their backing for the important cause.
Prime Active Communities, who is one of the few charities that receive donations through Children in Need, were in attendance at Hurst Cross and were interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester.
