A ‘stink’ that has plagued the residents of Dukinfield, Audenshaw and Denton over recent years has returned, and residents are being urged to log each time they smell it.

For a number of years, the council has received complaints about the Ashton and Dukinfield Waste Water Treatment Plants, particularly when the weather is warm.

More than 50 complaints were made to the council about the sites in 2020 and, in order to try and resolve the issues, the council has held meetings with the United Utilities Area Management Team.

Now, Tameside Council is encouraging anyone with complaints to contact them directly, so that they can send a council officer to note the issue.

They say it will enable them to collect evidence to determine if a ‘statutory nuisance’ exists and then, if necessary, take the appropriate action. It will last for the whole month of August.

Tameside MBC has also written a letter to United Utilities, saying that they are concerned at the lack of progress at establishing what is causing the odours.

Gary Mongan, Regulatory Services Manager at the council, asked United Utilities to provide the council with all complaints received from March onwards.

Any residents with complaints about the odour should call the council directly on 0161 342 8355 during office hours, or the Emergency Control Team on 0161 342 2222 at other times.
