Visitors to Manchester's People’s History Museum (PHM) can see a piece of Tameside political history this summer.
The big talking point this summer, the 2024 general election, is given some fascinating historical context in the General Election Trail, which takes place at the museum untii September 30. I
t picks out some of the objects that highlight the twists and turns that have taken place across 20 different general elections; the figures involved and how British democratic history has been made.
Included on the trail is the jacket that Angela Rayner, the newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister, wore on her first appearance at Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) on September 16, 2020. It is one of the museum’s most recent acquisitions.
As deputy leader of the Labour Party, and shadow deputy prime minister, it was unusual for Rayner to deliver the opposition's questions to then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
On this occasion Ms Rayner stepped in for the Labour Party leader, Sir Keir Starmer, who was unable to attend Parliament due to COVID-19 rules requiring him to self-isolate at home.
Ms Rayner questioned Johnson on pay for care workers, provision of COVID testing, and restrictions on who could accompany people giving birth during the pandemic.
