ANGELA RAYNER: 'We must put Britain at the forefront of transforming treatment for dementia'

This week, I would like to talk about dementia.

This cruel condition impacts so many families. Almost half a million people in England have a confirmed diagnosis, but I know that the total number living with the condition is even higher.

I sympathise profoundly with all those affected, whether facing dementia themselves or caring for a loved one.  A timely diagnosis is vital to ensure people can access the care and support they need to live well and remain independent for as long as possible.

I am pleased that sustained efforts have been made to restore the diagnosis rate following the pandemic and that we are seeing a gradual recovery. NHS England continues to monitor the monthly diagnosis rate and analyse trends to support delivery of timely diagnoses.

NHS England has also funded two trusts in each region to pilot the Diagnosing Advanced Dementia Mandate tool with the aim of improving the diagnosis of dementia and the provision of support in care homes. These pilots have all now been completed and findings are expected to be shared soon.

We must ensure that every person with dementia receives high-quality care and that their families are supported. I understand NHS England has recently refreshed the RightCare Dementia Scenario, which sets out best practice for supporting people with dementia.

I strongly welcome my Government’s plans for social care more widely, including an £86 million boost to the Disabled Facilities Grant and an expansion of the national career structure for care staff. The carer’s allowance weekly earnings limit is also being increased to £196, the largest increase in the limit since the allowance was first introduced.

Longer term, I am pleased that this Government has announced the launch of an independent commission into adult social care, a first step towards the creation of a national care service.

We must put Britain at the forefront of transforming treatment for dementia, supporting research and ensuring that new treatments are rolled out in a safe and timely way.   I am pleased that his Labour Government is investing in dementia research across all areas, including causes, diagnosis and prevention.
