Two bigger and improved mosques are among the most significant plans tabled with council across Greater Manchester this week.
The Jalalia Jaame Mosque has been in the centre of Rochdale since the 1970s. Now there is a plan to transform their place of worship to better suit the needs of locals.
The dome and minaret on the outside will be replaced and more space will be created inside to make the site a better fit for modern day practice.
Over in Bury, plans for a new mosque in the Prestwich area have been delayed, so councillors can pay the site a visit. Prestwich Muslim Welfare Trust also believe their mosque needs to expand to meet the needs of the people in Bury.
Here is a breakdown of each borough’s recently submitted public notices:
Bolton
Town centre through road could be closed to traffic or made one way to allow ‘markets, outdoor seating and socialising’
A town centre road layout is set to be transformed if council proposals are agreed.
Bolton council is encouraging people to have their say on the future of Winter Hey Lane in Horwich. The road is in the heart of the town centre and currently provides a two-way link between Chorley New Road and Lee Lane.
People are being invited to give feedback on two options that have been developed by the council along with residents, businesses and local councillors from the Horwich town centre steering group.
Bury
The ‘grey belt’ argument that could see 350 homes built within a whisker of the hard shoulder
Plans have been submitted for a huge new housing estate, an employment area and park and ride on green belt land next to the M66.
Hollins Strategic Land (HSL) said they will shortly be submitting a planning application for the residential-led development at a 60 acre site at Walmersley Brook, Bury.
It will include 350 new homes, a neighbourhood centre, a business area, green spaces and a park and ride facility.
Much of the site’s border is just yards from the M66 hard shoulder and the junction 3 northbound slip-road for vehicles leaving the motorway to get to Bury and Heywood.
New mosque decision delayed so councillors can visit the site
A planning decision to demolish a mosque and replace it with a larger building has been delayed as councillors want to visit the site.
A report presented to Bury’s planning committee said the current mosque, on Bury Old Road, Prestwich, had ‘limited facilities’ and the building had deteriorated in recent years. The proposed new building, to provide a place of worship, teaching space and community facilities will be three storeys in height and is bigger than the existing mosque.
The applicant, Prestwich Muslim Welfare Trust, said facilities would include a youth recreation room, library and community meeting space, a prayer hall, mortuary and separate male and female teaching rooms.
A total of 1,180 representations were received by Bury council with 1,009 supporting the plans and 164 objecting.
Manchester
One more huge telecommunications mast planned for Manchester
Another 20m-tall (65ft) telecommunications pole is planned for north Manchester – this time at Droylsden Road in Failsworth.
It follows an almost-identical application on Crescent Road in Crumpsall, from the same firm last week.
Cornerstone said the Failsworth structure will support six antennas and be installed along with ‘equipment cabinets’, much like the Crumpsall bid.
Roadworks are hitting three major routes in Manchester this week:
Moss Side: Moss Lane West has been closed since August 26 for resurfacing. Residential access will be maintained throughout the roadworks, however. It’s expected to close for six weekends.
Wythenshawe: Woodhouse Lane was closed between Poundswick Lane and Hollyhedge Road from July 28, and expected to reopen after five weeks. However, it is still listed as closed on the council’s website.
Moston: Hollinwood Avenue has been closed between Greengates Roundabout and the Oldham boundary at Owler Lane at weekends from August 9, for six weekends.
Oldham
Old farm building could become new nursery
An old farming and industrial site in Chadderton could soon be transformed into a children’s day nursery.
Hill Top Farm off Chadderton Fold would see its buildings repurposed in order to fill demand for a nursery for children in the area, according to applicant Mrs Hayley Rennie.
The building would be developed to provide a play area for the nursery, and vehicular access and car parking to facilitate pick-ups and drop-offs of children by parents and guardians.
Rochdale
New and improved mosque planned for one Greater Manchester town
A new and improved Mosque could soon be built in the heart of Rochdale as part of a ‘legacy project’ for the community.
The Jalalia Jaame Mosque has been earmarked for a proposed extension and remodelling. The Trafalgar Street site has grown in size and popularity since it was built back in the 1970s, now the mosque wants to transform to better suit the needs of the area.
A first floor extension; a lift and two stairways; improved common area facilities; and a small addition to the main prayer space are all proposed inside the building.
It will look vastly different from the outside, with the current dome and minaret being removed and replaced with a more modern design and new minaret.
Castleton to Rochdale Active Travel Scheme – Phase 2
Until January 31, 2027, staggered works will take place along Manchester Road between Castleton and Rochdale to deliver phase two improvements.
Salford
Developer urged to pull plug on £1bn plan for region’s tallest skyscraper
A developer has been urged to pull the plug on a £1 billion proposal which includes building Greater Manchester’s tallest skyscraper.
The plan by Henley Investment Management aims to build 3,300 homes at Regent Retail Park off Regent Road in Salford, but a decision on the development was postponed by the council’s planning committee earlier this summer.
The design includes a cluster of ten tower blocks, the biggest up to 273 metres or around 78 stories, which would make it the tallest tower in the region if built.
Stockport
The massive plan for yet more change in Stockport town centre
New plans will see major changes to Stockport town centre – backed by nearly £10m in funding.
The money has been reprioritised from the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, and will be used to pay for upgrades at Stockport railway station and create greener ways to travel about the town.
More than £4m has been earmarked for the train station to bring ‘improved pedestrian connections’ on the Edgeley side, alongside an application for a new connection from Thompson Street which would create a ramp shortcut route.
Greek Street, Stockport – Road Closure
Until Spring 2026, Greek Street roundabout in Stockport will be closed for railway bridge replacement works.
Works expected to last until Wednesday, April 1.
Tameside
How new transport hub connecting tram, trains and buses in Greater Manchester town would work
Ashton will be the first town in Greater Manchester to combine bus, tram and train services at a massive ‘hub’.
As part of a huge overhaul of the town centre, Tameside’s civic centre will also welcome the first fully integrated Bee Network hub, according to town hall bosses.
It means Metrolink, bus, and rail services will all be connected within a 200-metre radius by a network of footpaths.
Mottram-in-Longdendale/Hollingworth, Tameside
Planned road layout changes will take place on Roe Cross Road & A57 Mottram Moor. The preliminary works are part of a wider project to build two new link roads between Manchester and Sheffield.
Works expected to last until January 31, 2028.
Trafford
60-foot high telecoms mast destined to be put up in Old Trafford
Plans to erect a 60ft high telecoms mast and base station on a grass verge in Old Trafford have been submitted.
Digital company Cornerstone has tabled the proposal for the land at Addison Crescent near its junction with Kings Road.
The application has appeared on Trafford council’s planning portal and is a notification under general permitted development regulations which cover such masts if they are below 97ft in height.
Cornerstone’s mast would support six antennas and a dish together with two ground-based equipment cabinets.
Talbot Road/Chester Road, Old Trafford – Roadworks
To allow active travel improvements, a road closure will be in place at the junction of Chester Road & Talbot Road (by Seymour Grove), restricting vehicles accessing Chester Road from Talbot Road. Signed diversion routes will be in place during this time.
Works expected to last until Sunday, November 30.
