A very special Christmas celebration was held at Ashton’s Broadoak and Smallshaw Community Centre. The event was organised by the community group Dipak Dristi.
The group was initially set up by Champaben Mistry following the loss of her husband. Feeling isolated and without a sense of purpose, Champaben decided to do something practical that would also help others in a similar situation and several years ago Dipak Dristi, which translates as ‘Light of Focus’ became a reality. The group has grown, raising money for good causes and organising a range of events. They have fundraised for Willow Wood Hospice, Cancer Research, Age UK and many other charities. The group also holds regular social gatherings and various activity sessions at the Broadoak Community Centre for senior citizens. This Christmas, Dipak Dristi also donated funds and toys for teenagers. Group members are mainly of Indian origin and celebrate Christmas with a multi- faith, diverse approach, truly bringing everyone together. The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Tafheen Sharif, attended the joyful Christmas event and said: “It’s wonderful to see all these wonderful women and men, all dressed up, enjoying themselves, coming out from isolation, mixing in this magical time of the year.”
