Following the shock resignation of newly appointed Glossop North End boss Ashley Connor, the Hillmen have moved swiftly to bring in his replacement.
Connor left the club last Thursday after just six days in charge, with ‘unexpected circumstances’ leading to his departure.
Now, former club captain and assistant manager Lee Wilshaw is set to take the reins at Surrey Street, this time on a permanent basis.
The 30-year-old already has experience of the dugout, having served as interim manager for two matches across October following the departure of Richard Brodie, winning both and ending GNE’s run of seven straight defeats in the process.
Wilshaw then took a backseat for last Tuesday’s 5-0 thrashing of Shirebrook Town, Ashley Connor’s first and only game in charge.
Saturday saw the Hillmen record their fourth straight victory, with Wilshaw and fellow first team coach Colin Morrison overseeing a 2-1 win at Stockport Town.
The former defender first joined GNE as a player in 2019, going on to make 96 appearances across four seasons.
Following Wilshaw’s appointment, a spokesperson for the club commented:
“In light of recent events, the club felt it was important to look internally for leadership — someone who understands the current mood, the direction of the squad, and who can be trusted to have the best intentions for Glossop North End at heart.
“Lee’s strong connection with the club, his leadership qualities, and his recent influence on results made him the clear choice to guide the team forward.
“Having already taken charge of three of the last four fixtures, Lee has overseen an impressive spell in which the Hillmen have picked up four victories, underlining his impact and the positive response from the players.
“Under Lee’s management, the club will focus on a clear plan for progression: short term - bringing stability and adding depth to the squad, medium term - working towards achieving a two-points-per-game ratio, and long term - building a side capable of competing for the play-off places.
“His commitment and understanding of the club’s identity make him ideally placed to take on this next challenge.
“He will be supported by Coach Colin Morrison and Sports Therapist Sophie Marsden, who continue in their current roles as part of the backroom team.
“The club now looks forward with confidence and excitement as a new chapter begins under Lee Wilshaw’s leadership.”
