Weekend Review: Derbyshire And Cheshire Cricket League

A fantastic Finals Day on Sunday which stretched for nearly 10 hours saw Woodley fail to add the trophy to the Bissenden Cup.

The club went down to Newton who were chasing a moderate 114-9 and got home easily by six wickets with time to spare.

Earlier in the day Newton had been involved in a thrilling semi-final against Whaley Bridge.  Newton put up an imposing 169-7 but Whaley Bridge took them to the final ball.  With three needed and the last pair at the wicket a run-out gave Newton victory. Woodley had a comfortable 65-run win over Tintwistle in the second semi.

Readers Division One

An epic game at third placed Newton saw the home team beat leaders Woodley by a very narrow margin.  Chasing Newton’s 155ao the visitors needed 11 with the last pair at the wicket but Newton held their nerve winning by three runs.  Dove Holes beat Old Glossop by 15 runs in a high scoring game to keep second place and are now only 18 points behind with two games left.

Whaley Bridge are promoted  and showed their credentials for the top division with an emphatic eight wicket win over Dove Holes.  The race for the other promotion place lies between Pott Shrigley and Stalybridge who met at Gorse Hall Road with the former winning easily.

Newton remain in top spot despite going down to Woodley who narrowed the gap to 15 points.  At the bottom Chapel are doomed with the other relegation place looking to be between Broadbottom; Stalybridge and Hayfield.
