Weekend football round-up: FA Cup wins all round

It was a perfect day for our three teams in FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round action yesterday, with all three progressing from tricky away ties.

Mossley were the biggest winners, smashing four unanswered goals past Colne.

An injury time double from Reece Webb-Foster capped a dominant Lilywhites display, adding to earlier strikes from Luke Barlow and Obua Mugalula.

They’ll host the winners of the replay between Vauxhall Motors and Eccleshill United in the Preliminary Round on August 17.

Stalybridge Celtic, playing at this stage of the competition for the first time, overcame a potential banana skin at Ramsbottom United.

Connor Hughes scored his first goal for the club in six years to give the Celts a half-time lead, but it wasn’t all plain sailing for James Kinsey’s side.

Rammy equalised straight after the restart, but a late penalty from captain Liam Tongue and an injury time clincher from Hughes pushed the Celts to a 3-1 win and a home tie against Widnes, who overcame Ossett United 1-0.

Tom Lawless played a part in all three Glossop North End goals as they put their two league defeats behind them to beat fellow North West Counties side Litherland REMYCA.

The young striker scored either side of half-time against his old club, as well as teeing up sub Leke Ajibode to open his account for the Hillmen.

Their opponents from Liverpool hit a consolation goal with seven minutes left on the clock, but it’s Glossop who will next face West Didsbury & Chorlton.

It took a 94th minute winner for West – who beat Richard Brodie’s side on the opening day of the season - to defeat Burscough 3-2 in a see-saw game at Brookburn Road.

Elsewhere in the North West Counties, New Mills clattered league new boys Shawbury United 8-0 at Church Lane.

Lee Knight, Harry Dean and man of the match Declan Hacking all netted a brace, with James Berry and Chris Pauley adding the rest.

The Millers visit Sandbach United in the First Division South on Tuesday night.

In the First Division North, though, Droylsden’s unbeaten run rattled to a decisive end as they lost 4-0 at Holker Old Boys.

The Bloods couldn’t recover from conceding to a penalty just before half-time, which also saw centre-half Eoin Charles sent off.

Dave Pace’s side are back at the Butchers Arms on Tuesday night against Ashton Town, who have also won one, drawn one and lost one of their three games.

Our three remaining semi-pro clubs played their final pre-season friendlies on Saturday with a mixed set of results against higher ranked opposition.

Curzon Ashton shared a goalless draw with National League side, FC Halifax Town, at the Tameside Stadium.

Their neighbours Ashton United were also at home, succumbing to two early Chorley goals.

Finally, a Connor Heath equaliser at Marine ensured Hyde United made it through pre-season unbeaten.
