Following his side's 2-1 victory over Chester FC in the FA Trophy on Saturday, Curzon Ashton manager Adam Lakeland spoke to Ian Cheeseman to provide his thoughts on the spirited comeback.

Curzon put themselves into the next round Buildbase FA Trophy after coming from behind to secure a 2-1 at the Tameside stadium.

Chester arrived with Interim manager Danny Livesey for his first game in charge after the departure of joint managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.

In the early stages and bitter wind both sides cancelled themselves out in the midfield areas with very few chances which never troubled either keeper until the 40th minute when Chester took the unlikely lead.

Before the goal Curzon’s Jordan Lussey and Marcus Poscha had shots in and around the box which were both blocked and for Chester George Glendon he saw his shot dragged wide of Chris Renshaw far post.

Chester should have taken the lead on 39 minutes when they broke leaving a one-on-one chance but a superb block deny the shot however a minute later a cross from the right found ex-Curzon old boy Charlie Jolley at the back post, his header back into the danger area hit Poscha on his thigh and deflected past Renshaw to give Chester lead going in at the break.

In the second half Jack Dunn had the early chance to draw Curzon level after Alex Curran played him in for a one-on-one with keeper Louis Grey but Dunn wasted his chance hitting the side netting.

Chester’s Jack Redshaw on 56 minutes made Renshaw work when Renshaw had to get down and push Redshaw’s shot away but Curzon quickly launched a counterattack with the ball finding substitute Jack McKay who slipped the ball under Grey to draw Curzon level.

In fact it was the introduction of McKay that saw Curzon become more of an attacking force and his pace was a constant worry for the Chester’s back four.

A big chance came on 69 minutes for Curzon to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty, Matthew Waters stepped up, but his effort was well saved by Grey at the near post which swung the game in Chester’s favour.

On 71 minutes ex Curzon midfielder Luke Clark was inches wide when Chester were awarded a free kick around 20 yards out, then Redshaw hit the crossbar from 25 yards out as Chester went looking for the winning goal.

At the other end Adam Thomas inside the Chester’s box dragged his effort wide.

However, Curzon grabbed the winner on 87 minutes when following a corner Chester failed to clear their lines with Adam Thomas having two bites at the cherry to blast the ball high into the roof of the Chester’s net.

Overall, there was no much between the two sides but Curzon did have more of the chances and deserve their place in the next round.
