United View with Ben McCarthy: United's internationals continue to shine at World Cup

Following on from last week, here’s another rundown of how Manchester United’s players are getting on at the 2022 World Cup.

Group A - Netherlands (Tyrell Malacia)

The Netherlands finished top of their group. Teeing up a tie against the USA, where they won 3-1, advancing to the quarterfinals. Malacia has yet to make an appearance for the Dutch, but there's still time for the young fullback to get some minutes under Van Gaal.

Group B - England (Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford)

Maguire and Shaw both started in England’s comfortable 3-0 over Senegal. Rashford was dropped to the bench, despite grabbing two in his last match against Wales. He’s still a great option for England to bring on off the bench against a tiring full-back.

England now faces France in the Quarter Final.

Group C - Argentina (Lisandro Martinez)

Martinez didn’t feature in Argentina’s 2-0 win against Poland in the group stage but was brought on as a substitute against Australia. He helped his nation reach the Quarter Finals with a sensational block to deny Australia from equalising. The game finished 2-1 and now Martinez may face his club teammate Malacia as Argentina face Holland in the next round.

Group D - Tunisia (Hannibal Mejbri), Denmark (Christian Eriksen) and France (Raphael Varane)

Eriksen and Hannibal both crashed out early from the competition. Hannibal’s Tunisia shocked France with a 1-0 win but it wasn’t enough to advance to the knockout stages. Whereas Denmark only picked up a single point in an underwhelming display from a team much thought to be dark horses of the competition.

Meanwhile, Varane is through to the Quarter Finals after beating Poland 3-1. He’s cemented his place back in the side after returning from an injury he picked up while playing for United.

Group H - Portugal (Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes) and Uruguay (Facundo Pellistri)

Dalot and Fernandes have been in excellent form for Portugal. Despite losing their final group match to South Korea, they finished top of their group. Dalot started the match against South Korea and played well enough to keep his place at fullback, where he and Fernandes helped their country to an emphatic 6-1 win over the Swiss. They both now face Morocco in the Quarter Final, a side who have only conceded 1 goal so far in the competition.

Uruguay and Pellistri are both heading home after they failed to advance from their group. A late South Korea goal broke Uruguayan hearts. However, Pellistri has certainly shown he has the ability, the question now is whether he is given an opportunity at United.

Group G – Brazil (Antony, Fred and Casemrio)

In Brazil’s final group stage match against Cameroon, Fred and Antony were given starts. However, they could not make an impact and were beaten 1-0.  It didn’t amount to much as they had already qualified top of their group, where they then took on South Korea in the round of 16.

Fred and Antony were dropped, whereas Casemiro was brought back into the side. Brazil then proceeded to play exactly like Brazil at the World Cup, winning 4-1. They will now take on Croatia in the Quarter Final.

Should any team other than Croatia and Morocco go on to win the World Cup, Manchester United will have a player lifting the famous trophy.
