Wake up and smell the coffee, Manchester United’s front line might actually be quite good.
A Bryan Mbeumo brace and Matheus Cunha finally getting off the mark in United colours helped towards a 4-2 win over Brighton.
After a mixed start, United have now won three games in a row and look as though they have hit form.
Even after the win at Anfield, the prospect of facing Brighton posed a difficult test.
The Seagulls had won six of the previous seven Premier League meetings against United and had started to build momentum with wins over Chelsea and Newcastle in recent weeks.
However, just after the hour mark, Ruben Amorim’s side found themselves three goals up, and despite a late comeback from Brighton, the Reds struck again deep in stoppage time, giving a more flattering scoreline with a two-goal advantage.
We’ve already seen how Amad Diallo and Mbeumo have started to find joy down United’s right flank.
Still, with opposition beginning to focus on nullifying this area, Cunha needed to start contributing to the scoring for Ruben Amorim.
Thankfully, he did just that, opening his account in the 24th minute, with a goal we’ve come to expect from the Brazilian - a deft curling finish from range.
He’s gone close several times this season and he’s shown the threat he can provide if his side can get him into these kinds of positions.
United made revamping their attack a priority this summer, and at the moment, it looks to be paying off.
The proven Premier League quality of Mbeumo and Cunha is evident; meanwhile, Benjamin Sesko is looking promising, even providing an assist on Saturday, along with some good combination play.
There are still areas of the pitch that will need improvement, notably the midfield, although Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have found greater stability in recent games.
However, the overhaul of the front line from last season has injected a higher degree of quality, compared to last season, when United only managed to score 44 goals in the league.
Ruben Amorim’s side have looked better this campaign, but needed wins as evidence that the team was moving in the right direction.
It’s now three Premier League wins on the bounce, the first time that’s happened since February 2024.
After the game, United’s manager said, “I think we are improving in bad moments, we can respond in a different way, and we feel that we can solve anything. And that helps us to win these kind of games when you are in a good moment and then you struggle in the end, but you can feel that the team is a little bit different.”
This is arguably the best run of games Amorim has had during his time at Manchester United, and for the time being, his position is assured.
Even admitting that his side have been playing some of the best football since his arrival, owing it to an increased confidence amongst the group.
After a challenging opening nine games, which saw United face Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool, their next run of nine games is more favourable.
If they can continue to perform similarly, they could enter the Christmas period in a positive position.
United next face Nottingham Forest.
Although they have had a poor start, new boss Sean Dyche will be looking to kickstart his tenure following a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth.
A win could move United into the top four, a statement of intent, even though there is a large amount of the season still to be played.
If the trio of Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo continue their hot streak, the Reds will be confident to come away from the City Ground with all three points.
