The Overlap, the popular online football show hosted by businessman Gary Neville, has further expanded their media operations with the purchase of Manchester United influencer Mark Goldbridge’s YouTube channels in what is reportedly a seven-figure deal.
Neville sold a majority stake in the Overlap to Global back in January of this year, and the acquisition of Goldbridge looks to be the next step in growing that operation.
Mark Goldbridge is the founder of the controversial channel, ‘The United Stand’, as well as running a separate channel called ‘That’s Football’ which covers general football content.
Both channels have amassed over a combined 3 million subscribers, but Goldbridge, real name Brent Di Cesare, is a divisive figure amongst fans, from explosive rants and accusations of spreading toxicity and unwarranted rumours.
Back in 2023, the channel uploaded a video titled, ‘Rashford future in doubt?’ which discussed the player’s form, to which the England international’s personal X account replied, asking to stop spreading ‘malicious rumours’.
Whether players regularly watch his content is uncertain, but the interaction illustrated the impact and outreach of the videos on his channel.
For many people, this is their primary source of information and opinion.
Goldbridge films live match reactions from his studio rather than attending games in person, and his most viral clips tend to arrive when United are struggling.
Critics argue he is more interested in capitalising on the club’s misfortunes than offering balanced analysis.
Supporters counter that he is outspoken and authentic, a pioneer of the media landscape that now surrounds football.
The YouTuber has long prided himself on sitting outside the mainstream media. Now he is very much a part of it.
He already has a deal with the Bundesliga to show live matches and was a host of the late-night show on TalkSport.
The success is hard to deny; whether it’s morally right is another question.
There has been tension between the two figures, making this deal all the move surprising.
Only a couple of years ago, Goldbridge labelled the Overlap’s fan debate as ‘classist’, and Neville publicly said he would not have him on the show.
Now, both operate under the same umbrella. A meeting between the two, once highly unlikely, seems inevitable.
Global’s strategy is to build a network targeting major European clubs, anchored by former players and journalists.
Goldbridge, as one of the biggest names in online football media, is positioned as its flagship.
The news has landed poorly for many United fans.
Neville has already drawn criticism for his punditry on the club, and aligning himself with a polarising figure may deepen that frustration.
This came only a day after United’s 2-1 defeat against Leeds at Old Trafford.
The Reds had a three-week gap since their last game and struggled to get going in the first half, not helped by an injury blow to Kobbie Mainoo and the suspension of Harry Maguire.
Lisandro Martinez’s red card for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair in the second half only made things more difficult, but the Reds pulled one back late on through Casemiro.
Although they were unable to find an equaliser and suffered their first league defeat at home to Leeds since 1981.
United’s push for Champions League was aided by Manchester City, as they beat Chelsea on Sunday, but the Reds will need a result against Liam Rosenior’s side to keep up their pursuit of a top-five finish.
