The Tour 2026 spotlight: The X-Trail 10k

Ahead of iconic local running event, The Tour 2026, we’re shining a light on all four individual races, starting with the curtain raiser – The X-Trail 10k.

The 10k route takes in two superb country parks, and provides a variety of terrain to test all running abilities.

Both Daisy Nook and Park Bridge provide a challenging and fun test for all runners taking part.

With breathtaking country landscapes offered throughout the X-Trail race, the route really showcases the natural beauty of Tameside and takes place on closed roads, allowing runners to enjoy a traffic-free run.

The race provides the perfect opportunity for new runners to complete their first 10k, or for experienced athletes to hone their skills in a truly beautiful setting.

“The X-Trail 10k is probably our favourite of the four,” said East Cheshire Harriers coach and runner James Hartshorne, who is looking forward to taking part this June.

“It’s local to the club so we always feel like we need to do well on that one - it’s like our home ground really.”

Many East Cheshire Harriers athletes have produced stellar performances in past Tour events, including Tameside runner Katie Kay, who finished as runner up in 2023.

“It’s one of my favourite stages,” revealed Katie.

“I think it gets a bit underestimated. There’s always a lot of anticipation around the Hell on the Fell and the Half Marathon, so it sometimes gets forgotten about.

“It’s a really tough race with quite a lot of elevation, but it’s really scenic and there’s always that great camaraderie.

“It’s a great race to signify the start of an exciting few days.”

You can catch Katie and James on the year’s Tour 2026 start line, with the X-Trail kicking off the four-day event on Thursday June 18.
