Tameside futsal club crowned national champions on debut

A Tameside-based futsal club has been crowned National Futsal League Tier 3 champions in its very first season—after almost missing out on a place in the competition.

Sala Futsal Club’s newly formed men’s team only entered the league at the last minute after another side withdrew, having initially been denied entry following a vote by other clubs.

But the late inclusion proved to be a turning point. Driven by that early setback, Sala’s young squad went on an impressive 15-game unbeaten run to secure the title.

They sealed the championship on April 6 with a convincing 10–3 victory over local rivals Inspired Futsal in a Tameside derby.

The success means Sala will now be promoted to National Futsal Series Tier 2 North for the 2026/27 season.

The team features a number of players developed through the club’s own youth system, including Noah Lucas (right), who recently represented Scotland in FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifying last week, along with former Sala coach Kai Lawless.

Club chairman Neil Lucas said: “It’s been a fantastic achievement to win the league in our first season.

“The players have been outstanding, and it shows the strength of the pathway we’ve built from junior to senior futsal.”

Sala Futsal Club runs weekly training sessions in Tameside and Gorton for children aged 6–16 and is now looking to recruit new adult players and sponsors ahead of next season.
