Tameside Football Preview

Some of our Tameside football teams are in action this weekend including a mouth-watering derby in the Northern Premier League. 

Hyde United vs Ashton United

Arguably the biggest game in the region this weekend sees Hyde host Ashton United in a clash that should be a cracker. It is the first time that the two have played each other in a league fixture since 2016. Hyde have had a good start to the campaign and currently sit on fourth and more importantly, they are ten points ahead of their local rivals Ashton and can stretch that to thirteen with a win. Hyde’s last match in the league, however, was a 2-0 loss away at promotion-chasing Whitby Town. 

It’s all about playing catch up now for Ashton United as they are currently sitting in 19th position after a poor start to the league. Performances have improved, however, and they are through to the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup. Like Hyde, Ashton’s last league game was a loss to Whitby in a 2-1 scoreline at Hurst Cross. For Ashton, a win is needed to kick start their campaign which started with expectations of promotion. 

Farsley Celtic vs Curzon Ashton

Curzon Ashton travels to newly promoted Farsley Celtic this weekend as they look to put a disastrous week behind them. Curzon were knocked out of the FA Cup after initially drawing their 2nd qualifying round match at home to Blyth Spartans but The Nash lost the replay. It was a damaging defeat for Curzon as Blyth are bottom of the National League North and it stretched their winless run to nine games in all competitions. 

It will prove to be a tricky game for Curzon as Farsley have made an impressive start to the season following their promotion last season. Their last match in the league was a 3-0 win away at Leamington and they currently occupy 6th place in the table.

Witton Albion vs Stalybridge Celtic

Stalybridge will be hoping they have firmly put their bad patch of form behind them after a 3-2 win at home to Grantham Town on Tuesday. The win ended a five-game run without a win in all competitions. They travel to Witton Albion this weekend in a fixture which sees both teams occupying mid-table after an okay start to the campaign. Stalybridge started the season well but after tailing off they find themselves in 12th place. Witton sits in 10th place and have enjoyed some good form recently as they beat Hyde 2-0 just a few weeks ago. 

Stalybridge could go as high as seventh with a win but they could also drop as low as sixteenth with a loss.
