Spooner calls time on Hyde United tenure

Hyde United have announced the resignation of first team manager Nick Spooner, just seven games into the NPL season. 

The club “reluctantly” received Spooner’s resignation just over 24 hours after Saturday’s draw with Hebburn Town, and say the news “came as a shock.” 

The 54-year-old took over as Tigers boss in February 2022, guiding the club to safety in his first season, before recording back-to-back sixth place finishes. 

Spooner also guided Hyde to their first Cheshire Senior Cup win in almost three decades in the 2023/24 campaign, defeating Crewe Alexandra in the final. 

First team coach Gavin McCann has also departed the Project Solar Stadium, with Martin Coyne, Chris Shaw, and first team captain Jack Redshaw set to take temporary charge of the side. 

Following his departure, Spooner took to X to share a statement, which read: 

“I realise that this may have come across as a shock, it’s been a tough decision, but it feels like the right time to step away. 

“I want to thank the board for giving me the opportunity and the fans for their amazing support throughout. 

“I am proud of what we have achieved at Hyde and feel like we have left the club in a good place going forward. 

“I am extremely grateful to everyone at Hyde, and I wish the team nothing but the best.” 

The club added: 

“The club regret that their tenure here has come to an end and would like to thank Nick and Gavin for all of their hard work over the past three and a half years and wish them all the best for the future in whatever comes next.  

“They will always be welcomed back at the Project Solar Stadium.”
