Several stars set to stay at Hurst Cross

Following Steve Cunningham’s decision to stay on as Ashton United boss for 25/26, a number of senior players have followed suit.

So far, 12 members of last season’s squad have committed their future to Hurst Cross.

The Robins will once again be led out in the upcoming campaign by skipper Luke Burke, who is set to enter his third season with the club.

Since his arrival in 2023, the 27-year-old has been ever present in Cunningham’s back line, making just short of 100 appearances.

Also capable of stepping into midfield, Burke’s versatility paired with his strong leadership skills have made him a fan favourite at Hurst Cross.

The former Wigan Athletic man will be joined by player-assistant manager Sean Newton, who is also set to remain at the club for the upcoming season.

The defender made his 750th career appearance in 24/25, and at 36, his experience will be vital going forward both on and off the pitch.

Long serving centre back Sam Baird and talented left back Josh Doherty complete the defensive renewals.

At the other end of the field, Robins fans will be delighted with the news that last season’s top scorer, Darius Osei, will once again lead the line next season.

The former Stalybridge Celtic man will be hoping to build on last season’s impressive tally of 22 goals in all competitions.

Elsewhere, prolific winger Al Byrne will also be sticking around for the upcoming campaign.

Byrne will enter his third season in an Ashton United shirt and will be hoping to build on his impressive tally of 50 goal involvements in 67 games.

In midfield, James Hardy, Remi Efunnuga, Louis White, Callum Rowe and Bobby Bjork have also put pen to paper, along with striker Tom Denton.
