Rugby legend visits Tameside

England legend Jason Robinson visited Tameside last week supporting a primary school Tag Rugby festival hosted by Ashton Sixth Form college.

The event was a joint effort between Tameside School Sports Partnership, The Stamford Park Trust and the Jason Robinson Foundation.

Schools were invited to bring along a team of Year Four and Fives to compete in a fun and developmental festival aiming to raise the profile of rugby and encourage more children to play.

Young leaders from Ashton Sixth Form and Rayner Stephens High School helped officiate the matches and support the pupils.

Jason had photos taken, signed autographs and gave away rugby balls.

Emma Toone, Partnership Development Manager of Tameside School Sports Partnership said: “What a great morning we have had.

“Approximately 100 pupils playing rugby, some for the first time and enjoying their sport.

“Rugby teaches children respect, determination and teamwork so well and you can definitely tell that the schools were enjoying themselves.”

Jason Robinson added:

“It’s been brilliant to come over to Tameside and see what is on offer for schools.

“It’s great to support such an event and see the pupils enjoying playing rugby.

“I’ve watched a lot of the games and the children are doing really well and scoring some amazing try’s.”

Mark Storie from Stamford Park Trust said: “Working in partnership with other organisations has meant that we can bring festivals like this to Tameside and offer opportunity for young leaders to gain experience.

“We look forward to delivering a bigger event next year!”
