What a way to respond to the critics! Last week, Manchester United were talk of the town for losing at home to bottom club Sheffield United – this week they’re talk of the town for beating Southampton NINE-nil.

That just about sums up this crazy Premier League season, doesn’t it?

Incredibly, I’ve now watched the Reds win 9-0 twice in my lifetime – and I’ve also seen Southampton lose 9-0 twice in two seasons!

I will admit, I felt quite sorry for Ralph Hasenhüttl, who I think is a brilliant coach, and his Southampton players on Tuesday night. They’ve been plagued with injuries and after being reduced to ten men after not even two minutes, the writing was on the wall.

When that shocking challenge on Scott McTominay received red, there was only one thing on my mind: goal difference. 

United haven’t put games to bed comfortably anywhere near as much as I’d have liked this season, barring that 6-2 over Leeds, so it was great to see this one all but over as a contest after just half-an-hour.

A win like that, with everyone chipping in for goals and assists, was just what we needed after a couple of disappointing results last week.

I thought everyone was excellent, in particular are full-backs Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Shaw, who for me is playing the best football of his career at the moment, recorded two beautiful assists, while Wan-Bissaka, who is really improving his offensive game, got himself a goal and assist.

I’m happy that Anthony Martial got himself back on the scoresheet, twice, too – and they were good goals as well.

His confidence was visibly low after eight games without netting and only two league goals to his name this season, so I’m hoping he can kick on from Tuesday night and start looking like the player who promised so much last year. 

The whole team needs to kick on now, in fact, as this relentless schedule only gets busier as we head into the business end of the season.

We’ve got a huge game against Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday, which is a must-win in my eyes if we’re to stay in this title race.

Betfred have United at 8/15 to win, with Everton 11/2 and the draw 10/3.

The fact that Liverpool and City play each other a day later on Sunday makes this game even more important, with at least one of them guaranteed to drop points – although that result means nothing if we don’t do the business ourselves of course.

For that massive top of the table clash at Anfield, league leaders City are 11/8 favourites, with champions Liverpool 2/1 – while the draw is 5/2.

City, being top of the table with a game in hand on both us and Liverpool, are odds-on favourites at Betfred to win the Premier League – but I do believe there are plenty more twists and turns to go in this truly unique campaign.

Here’s to hoping one of those twists will be United winning title number 21!
