Review: Stalybridge Snooker League

Like all other sport , the Stalybridge Snooker League has been suspended until the situation improves.

League secretary Ian Hopton reviews the the season so far.

The current league season started in September last year with our AGM when we welcomed two new teams , Denton Conservative Club and Hyde Club, and one other team changed its name from Hyde Snooker Club to Hyde Conservative Club when it moved premises. Regrettably , we also lost Staley Vegas as they could not get enough players to remain in the league.

The league season started in the usual manner with the Gordon Clay and George Fletcher Trophy finals , between league champions and cup winners. In the snooker competition, the George Fletcher Trophy, Hyde Snooker Club beat Mossley A 3-2 and in the Whist, Gordon Clay Trophy, Mossley A beat St Peters by two points with the game going to the final end.

In the Snooker League, the first quarter saw Hyde CC take an early lead with three other teams right behind them. After six games Hyde CC had 22 points with St Peters, Mossley A and Staly Labour joint-second with 16 points. In the Whist League it was even closer with Hyde Club, Denton CC, Mossley B and Mossley A joint-top on eight points .

The end of the second quarter saw the league start to take shape with Hyde CC still at the top of the Snooker League. They now had 38 points from 12 games  and St Peters followed with 36 points, then Denton CC on 35 with Mossley A on 32. In the Whist League it was again still very close with three teams sharing 16 points. They were St Peters, Mossley B and Denton CC.

The third quarter again showed the consistency of Hyde CC, who still topped the Snooker League with 56 points from 18 games, closely followed by St Peters on 52 points. Mossley  A  had 48 and Denton CC had 47 points. In the Whist League it was still very close but this time we had Mossley B top with 26 points and St Peters were joint-second with Denton CC on 24 points.

We only had the chance to play one game of the fourth and final quarter before the league suspension and currently Hyde CC have 60 points with St Peters second with 57 points and Mossley A on 51. In the Whist League, Mossley B and Denton CC are joint- top on 26 points with St Peters and Mossley A on 24 points.

While the snooker and whist leagues were being played we also ran an individual darts league and the current positions are P Stamp [ Denton CC ] in first place, I Carter [ Mossley B ] second, M Chandler [Denton CC ] in third and A T Tate [St Peters ] in fourth.

There are still five more games to be played before the end of the season and hopefully we can finish them in the months to come.
