Ashton United bowed out of the NPL Premier play-offs at the semi-final stage on Tuesday after a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Worksop Town.
It was always going to be a tough ask for the Robins, travelling to the side that finished 2nd in the regular season, and things got even tougher on the half-hour mark when Liam Hughes smashed the ball into the roof of the net to open the scoring for the hosts.
But Steve Cunningham’s side showed no signs of lying down and found an equaliser through Jason Gilchrist, who headed the Robins level on the hour mark.
The away side then thought they’d gone ahead when they had the ball in the net 20 minutes from time only to be denied by the referee's whistle, which sounded for an alleged foul in the build-up.
Less than five minutes later, the Tigers regained their lead when Jordan Burrow nodded home after Hughes’ initial effort cannoned back out of the crossbar, to break the hearts of the travelling Ashton fans.
