Opening day defeat for Glossop

After a disappointing 2024/25 season, Glossop RUFC started the new campaign with defeat at Sefton.

The Hillmen travelled to Liverpool to get their new season underway and found life in their new league tough going.

Demoted last season, Glossop quickly fell behind at Sefton as the home side played a simple direct brand of rugby.

Good ball retention and passing saw Sefton crash over for a 5-0 lead.

This pattern was repeated a few minutes later as Glossop fell behind 10-0.

Worse was to come for the visitors as they lost imposing second row Lyndsey with a dislocated shoulder on 20 minutes.

A third try and conversion for Sefton saw them lead 17-0 at half time.

With Skipper Zak Round missing this game injured for Glossop, stand in Connor Grime stepped up to the mark with a typical belligerent run and forced his way over for a try which Tom Dearnaley converted to reduce the deficit to 17-7.

However Sefton got their bonus point try soon after, which they converted to lead 24-7.

Then the versatile Jon Tennant got a second try for the Hillmen which recent recruit Ben Dearing converted to see the score at 24-14.

Dearing had a good debut and there will be plenty more to come from him as Glossop find their feet.

However, Sefton had the final say on a pitch with a deceptively swirling wind as they went over in the corner and with the conversion good, they took the spoils 31-14.

I don’t think the coaching duo of Clark and Brammer should be too downhearted with this display as they look to iron out a few things before the next run out.
