New Mills welcome Derby youngsters

It promises to be a big Wednesday night for New Mills AFC, who will host Derby County's Under-23s in the Derbyshire Senior Cup quarter-final.

The two sides met at the end of the 1974/75 season when Derby County were league champions, but it was mainly a young side which turned out for the Rams on that August day. 

Tonight it is expected to be a young Derby side who will travel across the Peak District, as both teams bid to reach the semi-final stage of the county competition for all clubs playing in the National League System. 

It is the first time that Derby County has taken part in the competition for a number of years, with the Rams last lifting the trophy back in 2010/11.

The Rams - who are top of their 12-team league, one point ahead of Chelsea - reached this stage of the competition by beating Clay Cross Town on penalties last month, following a 1-1 draw in normal time. 

Meanwhile, the Millers have made two semi-final appearances in the past few seasons but have not played in the final since 1976. 

Mike Norton and Dave Birch's side received a bye to the second round, where they won 2-0 at Graham Street Prims before an impressive 2-1 victory at Ilkeston Town in round three, and will now take on the Championship side's youngsters. 

Kick-off at Church Lane will be at 7.45pm. 

The tie was due to be played last week but was rearranged.
