Midweek Football Review

Despite the recent awful weather, only one fixture fell victim to the rain on Tuesday night, as Stalybridge Celtic’s home clash against Mickleover in the NPL Premier Division was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Bower Fold.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Ashton United were hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to South Shields in the FA Cup against Bamber Bridge at Hurst Cross. 

However, the Robins were forced to settle for a goalless draw. To complete a frustrating evening for the hosts Michael Raynes was dismissed for a challenge on Macauley Wilson after the referee had given the matter some thought.

In the NPL North West, Mossley have fallen to back-to-back league defeats after a 3-1 loss at home to Clitheroe.

The league leaders got off to a great start when Kielen Adams opened the scoring in the third minute after firing home.

Danny Wilkins doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 24th minute from the edge of the area, before Kieran Feeney effectively wrapped the game up with a third in the 78th minute after curling home.

Mossley did salvage a bit of pride five minutes later through Danny McLaughlin,  but it mattered little as Clitheroe comfortably held out for the three points.

In the NPL South East, Glossop’s two-game unbeaten run came to a crashing end at Worksop Town in a 5-1 defeat.

The Hillmen looked to have maintained their fine form when Alfons Fosu-Mensah put them ahead in the fourth minute, however a capitulation soon followed as Worksop took a 3-1 lead into the half-time break.

And they added two more in the second half to cap off a dismal night for Peter Band’s side.

On Monday night, in the National League North, Curzon Ashton began their league campaign with a 1-1 draw against Alfreton Town at the Tameside Stadium.
