Mid-week Football Round-Up: Tameside and High Peak

Tuesday Night was action-packed with fixtures across the board. While Curzon Ashton and Hyde United came out victorious in their encounters, Ashton United only managed to secure a draw against Bamber Bridge FC.

Curzon Ashton continued their perfect start to their season after another impressive win during their mid-week fixture. They were up against an Oxford City team, who had come in hoping to secure their first win of the campaign. However, a stellar strike from the Nash’s Isaac Sinclair denied them on the night.

The win means that Curzon are now second in the table and only behind Scunthorpe United in terms of goal difference.

Hyde United also continued their unbeaten start to the season after a 2-1 win against Basford United. The Tigers opened the scoring in the 18th minute after a Harry Burn goal that had every Basford player left confused. They cemented their lead with another goal in the 56th minute coming from Ben Kershaw.

Basford came looking strong and eventually got a goal out of it in the 79th minute. Despite the late push from their opponents, the Tigers were able to see off the game and secure their third consecutive win of the season.

“It’ll come to a day, we’ve done a few times where we don't take our chances and we get punished but I think it was a very good performance,” said coach Nick Spooner.

Ashton United were only able to bag a point after their goalless draw against Bamber Bridge. A win against their opponents would have helped the club get higher on the table. Next they face off against Workington to try and continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Droylsden had another goal fest in their game as they put five past Ashton Athletic. The scoring started in the fifth minute through a penalty. They kept piling on and putting more pressure on their opponents and managed to score three more goals before halftime. Ashton managed to put one past Droylsden, but that proved to be just a consolation goal as the Bloods added a fifth goal in the 50th minute to confirm the three points for the team.

“The goals are coming from all over the pitch. We’re scoring plenty, keeping them to a minimal, obviously, we’ve conceded again today which is something we’ll want to work on, to try and shut teams out, if we don’t concede, we’ll always score so we’ll win games but again it’s another great win at home,” said assistant manager Phil Cooper while talking about the Bloods’ stellar goal-scoring run this season.

In another game played on the night, Glossop North End endured a heartbreaking loss against Padiham FC. With the game tied at 3-3 heading into the final five minutes, Glossop conceded a corner. However, a poor clearance from the team meant that Padiham would find the net through a crowd of bodies to make it 4-3. Glossop did not have enough left in their tank to equalise again and this led to them losing their second game on the trot.

New Mills FC got to the fourth position in the table after their 2-1 win against Foley Meir. Will Shawcross and Chris Pauley were the goal scorers on the night for the Millers. Foley Meir gave New Mills a tough fight despite conceding two as they scored with twenty minutes still left to play. However, the Millers showed a resilience in defence to confirm a good win on the night.
