Match Report: Workington 0-1 Hyde United

Hyde made the long trip up north to Workington, for the second time this season, in an important game for their Northern Premier League season.

The Tigers went into the tie favourites despite a few shakey performances and the home side being in relatively good form. Last time out, just a month ago, Hyde came out on top with goals from Lewis Alessandra and Jack Redshaw.

Workington started well as they looked dangerous whenever they got the ball into Hyde’s final third, putting some good balls in but just couldn't find a final touch to put the ball past Jordan Eastham and get an opener.

A good end to end game of football prospered as two attacking teams looked to open the scoring but neither looked as though they would capitalise, until with the last kick of the first half Callum Spooner nicked the ball off Jordan Little and slipped in Alessandra who scored what was possibly the easiest goal in his career as he tapped into an empty net.

The second half was similar to the first in terms of being an entertaining end to end affair. However despite there being no goals there were waves of chances for both sides.

The first fell to Hyde as Antoine Makoli and Manasse Mampala both had efforts stopped well by Jim Atkinson in The Reds goal.

Following these chances it was all Workington as they looked to snatch an equaliser. Scott Allison brought the ball into the box and struck well but Will Squires was on hand to put in a perfectly timed block.

Three minutes from time Hyde caught the home side on the break with Redshaw down the right and Makoli in the middle it was two against one
in The Tigers favour. Redshaw did well to beat his man as he brought the ball into the box, his shot was expertly saved by Atkinson and the ball
fell to Makoli who looked as though he couldn’t miss but an unbelievable block came in from out of seemingly nowhere by Little to deny Hyde a
second.

The game finished with Workington having all the press but they just couldn’t find the final touch to grab a point and The Tigers carry on
marching up the league and sit in second with seven games left to play.
