Match Report: New Brighton 20-7 Glossop

Credit: Ange Briggs

Glossop’s disappointing season continued on the Wirral as the team just one place above them proved too strong, particularly in the forwards.

The home side were first on the score sheet as a wonderful side step left the Hillmens defence flat footed. The try went unconverted to give New Brighton a 5-0 lead.

Glossop responded quickly though, through Captain Zak Round. He squeezed over in the corner following a series of good drives from his forwards and Dearnaley converted to see them lead briefly at 7-5.

The Wirral sides beefy forwards were causing problems with tackle breaking runs and the only other score of the half saw Brighton lead 10-7.

After the break, the physical nature of the game took its toll on both teams and both benches were emptied as the match continued.

New Brighton got their third try again through the forwards to extend their lead to 15-7.

The home side then got their fourth and bonus point try after a clever switch in midfield to see a final result of 20-7.

The Hillmen weren’t lacking in effort or endeavour in a season troubled from the start, with injuries, retirements and departees upsetting their rhythm and consistency of selection. The players bloodied in this campaign will no doubt reap the benefits of their experience in seasons to come.
