Match Report: Liverpool St Helens 46-24 Glossop

Glossop's hopes of getting off to a good start were dashed in the opening minutes, as first left winger Cassell went off injured and then debutant right winger Finn Winterbottom was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on.

As Glossop looked to restructure, one of the home sides big forwards rumbled over to leave an easy conversion, for the Saints to lead 7-0.  The Liverpool side then used their numerical advantage to add another converted try and penalty to forge ahead 17-0.  Glossop responded though, through the versatile Jon Tennant, following an excellent run and offload from Captain Round.

The home sides beefy forwards were producing powerful runs and went further ahead after a series of drives to lead 24-5.  The Saints backs showed what they could do as well though and a deft grubber kick through the Hillmens defence saw them gather and go under the posts to extend their lead to 31-5.

Glossop winger Winterbottom then retaliated with a try under the home sides posts, showing great speed and footwork.  Round converted to reduce the deficit to 31-12.  Just before the break LSH got a further try to go in at 36-12.

After the break Glossop came out firing and Winterbottom got his second which Round converted to leave the score 36-19.  The Saints then responded with a penalty to extend their lead to 39-19.

Further injuries didn't help Glossops cause but a red card for a high tackle saw the home side reduced to 14 men.  The Saints still managed to score one more try which they converted to lead 46-19.  The Hillmen then got a well deserved bonus point try through Dylan Johnston to see a final score of 46-24.

That Glossop had won the second half 12-10 showed that their recent improvements continue, as they look for their first win of the season.

Next week Glossop host high flying Didsbury TOC H.

Glossop seconds won 68-0 against a depleted Rochdale third team.
