Match Report: Glossop RUFC 12 Scarborough RUFC 10

The visitors, kicked off at a wet and blustery Hargate Hill and were immediately rewarded with a try under the posts as Glossop failed to clear their lines.

This try was converted to give Scarborough a 7-0 lead in the first minute. Fly Half Tom Dearnaley then reduced the deficit for Glossop with two penalties, the second  following a huge tackle in midfield from Captain Jake Gibson.

Defences were definitely on top for large parts of the game with both teams trying to play with ball in hand but failing to make clean breaks.

Before the half time break, Scarborough kicked another through ball similar to the one when they scored the try in the first minute, again, it caught Glossop napping. However, Glossop new guy Kelvin Ojeaburu was wide awake to it and showed the crowd just how much pace he has, by running from his wing to cover the home half, overtaking the Scarborough back that was running through and recovering the ball in the nick of time, saving a certain try for the home side. Not long after this, the Seasiders kicked a further penalty to lead 10-6 at the break, which was a much more respectable scoreline than what it may have been if not for the Glossop's new winger.

The Hill men started the second half with the wind at their backs and Dearnaley reduced the lead further with his third successful kick of the day before being replaced by youngster Will Howard.

There then followed a red card for Scarborough for a high tackle and it was Howard who stepped up to give Gibson’s men a deserved 12-10 lead.

Glossop then had to cope with a red card of their own as impressive debutant Kelvin Ojeaburu was sent from the field for a high, “head on head” tackle. As Glossop defended manfully, with former skipper Josh Edwards leading a fine tackling display, there was a yellow card for a Scarborough forward following a little skirmish. The visitors had one final kick at goal but failed to slot it and the Hill Men had their first win of the season.

Glossop travel to league leaders Selby in two weeks time.
