Match Report: Droylsden 3-1 Ashton Town

Droylsden earned three vital points on Tuesday night against Ashton Town AFC, their second win of the campaign following a mixed set of results in the start of the season.

In truth, the Bloods were poor for much of the game, looking nervy at times playing out from the back The closest chance in the first half came to the visitors when Kyle Oakes was dispossessed just outside the penalty box, but goalkeeper Jordan Latham was able to make the save.

Ashton almost took the lead just after half time, when Leon Wright hit the bar from an audacious effort from outside the box.

However, Droylsden finally took the lead in the 53rd minute when Caelan Kilheeney’s low-driven effort from range snuck under the goalkeeper who should have done better. It was still a great strike and from then on, the Bloods started to look significantly more threatening.

The second and third both came from corner kicks, with centre-halves Eoin Charles and Owen Whitehead getting the goals. Ashton failed to deal with the balls into the box and both were on hand at the back post to prod home their respective goals.

Ashton pulled one back just a few minutes before full-time with centre-half Mike Burke smashing home a volley following a free kick.

Overall, a good night for Dave Pace’s side, moving them just one place outside the playoff positions. Droylsden returns to the Butchers Arms this Saturday to take on Steeton.
