Local gymnastics club hosts annual fundraising event

Tameside School of Gymnastics (TSOG) recently held its annual fundraising competition, The Geoff Machan Cup, with an exciting Paris 2024 Olympics theme.

The event was a vibrant celebration of gymnastics and creativity, drawing inspiration and excitement for the upcoming Summer Olympics.

Over 100 children, from TSOG and other clubs in the region, took part to perform their incredible skills and display their hard work! Gymnasts had the opportunity to win medals for their performances, and also receive special awards for creativity, sportsmanship and artistry – encouraging gymnasts to express their individuality.

The Geoff Machan Cup not only showcases the talents of young gymnasts, but also honours and celebrates the club’s former director, Geoff Machan. Volunteering at the club for over 30 years, Geoff was known as “Mr Tameside Gymnastics” for his unwavering dedication and passion. The event was previously known as The Phil Tighe Competition, ran by Geoff Machan for over 20 years in memory of Phil Tighe who was a former coach at Tameside and other local clubs. This annual competition has always been a tribute to the amazing individuals who shaped the club’s history.

Cerys Allen, managing director and head coach at TSOG, commented “The way the whole team pulled together to put on such a fantastic event, from the gymnasts, to the coaches, parents and volunteers, made me really proud and I know that Geoff would be too!”

TSOG is a not for profit community interest company that holds regular fundraising events to fund new equipment, qualify new coaches, and attend external competitions throughout the year. The Geoff Machan Cup, which is their largest fundraiser, was held internally for the first time this year due to escalating costs of equipment hire. They hope that in the future, they will be able to return to larger venues!

If you would like to support local children achieving their sporting dreams and participating in gymnastics you can contact tamesidegymnastics@gmail.com to ask about making a donation or find out how you can volunteer.
