Local athletes excel at Track and Field Championships

The Greater Manchester Athletic Association (GMAA) Track and Field Championships were held at Trafford AC’s Longford Park on May 10 and 11, with running clubs from Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan all competing.

Among those competing was Ashton based club East Cheshire Harriers, who came away from the weekend with a number of medals.

In the under 15’s 200m race, the podium was solely occupied by East Cheshire Harriers athletes, with Olivia Jones picking up gold, Georgia Fielding racing to silver and Hollie Carroll sealing a bronze medal.

As well as winning the 200m race, Olivia also impressed in the 75m Hurdles, picking up another gold and equalling the championship record in the process, whilst also setting a new club record for East Cheshire Harriers and achieving England Athletics national standard.

Her terrific weekend didn’t end there though, as she also earned a silver medal for her performance in the under 15’s 100m race.

Another stand out performer from the weekend was youngster Jacob Shearing, who also came away with three medals.

He won gold in the under 13’s long jump, as well as racing to bronze in the 800 and 1,200m events.

Elsewhere, Max Ormston and Amelia Jones earned silver and bronze respectively in the under 17’s 200m sprint.

Amelia also picked up a bronze in the 300m race, while Max made it back-to-back silvers after a second-place finish in the 100m race.

In the under 20’s section, Joe Taylor won gold after a terrific performance in the 800m race , while Amy Starkey earned a silver medal in the high jump.

Finally, the under 17’s long jump saw Lucas Rhodes come away with bronze, while James Nelson won the same prize in the under 15’s shot put.

Club Secretary Mark Ormston said, “On behalf of the club, I would like to say a huge well done to all the East Cheshire athletes who competed at the weekend and congratulations to those that came away with medals. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication you put in to your training. Everybody at the club, especially your coaches are immensely proud of your achievements.”
