Hyde battle back to take the points at Shields

NPL Premier Division: South Shields 1-2 Hyde United

Hyde United continued their impressive run of form and battled from behind to take a 2-1 victory at title-chasing South Shields.

Jim Gannon's side entered the game having secured back-to-back victories over Ashton United and Nantwich Town, and despite the difference in standings between the sides on Saturday, the Tigers defied the odds and came from behind to secure a third straight win.

Hyde travelled to the first Cloud Arena in hope more than expectation, and their worst fears came to light in the seventh minute when the hosts took the lead through Will McGowan. A deep delivery to the back post was met by Conor Tee, who sent the ball across the face of goal for McGowan to head home from a few yards out.

To their credit the Tigers levelled matters just two minutes later, as a low ball into the box was neatly glanced home by Jonah Mitchell, with the aid of the goal post in the process.

It's no secret that Shields have ambitions of claiming promotion to the National League North, and the squad's quality shone through soon after with decent spells of possession ending in numerous opportunities that just went begging.

However, it was the visitors who were to take the lead in the 25th minute. Liam Tongue capitalised on an error and hit a hard effort past Myles Bony.

Hyde's valiant effort to take the three points were almost undone with five minutes remaining. Blair Adams found the ball on the edge of the box and hit a fierce effort that was destined for the back of the net, however the post came to the rescue.

Despite the scare, the Tigers coped with the late attacks and held out for a deserved three points.

Following the game, Gannon spoke to Hyde's media team:
