How Denton Town are exceeding expectations this season

Whittles Park, Denton Town

Denton Town have had a terrific season so far in the Cheshire Football League One, sitting in first place after 21 games.

The team from Tameside managed to remain one point ahead of rivals Parklands with an emphatic 5-0 win over Maine Road on Saturday (25 Feb).

A brace from attacker Aiden Hopkins ensured the home side would come away victorious. It was a crucial three points for Darren Saville’s side, who were in desperate need of a win after two defeats in a row. Denton will hope this win can help build momentum ahead of an even bigger game this Saturday (4 March), where they travel to promotion rivals Cheadle Heath Nomads.

Though there were levels of optimism in the Denton camp at the beginning of the season, even the most hardcore fan would not have expected the club to be in this position so late into the season. By manager Darren Saville’s own admission, his team is currently surpassing expectations. “The season has been very good so far”, said Saville. “We started the season with plans of what we wanted to achieve, as it stands, we are overachieving”.

He admits that the plan was to challenge for promotion next season but because of their great start to this season, his team’s goals have been slightly altered. “When we started the season, it was all about finishing in the top five or six, and then building for promotion next season”, he noted. “Where we find ourselves at the minute we’re in a promotion race, so targets have slightly changed, and we want to try and see if we can be in that top two at the end of the season and go up”.
