Hillmen March To Victory

An early penalty from fly half McGovern, saw Glossop take the lead against their Cheshire hosts. It also saw them lose solid full back Rob Sonczak with a hamstring injury and he was replaced by Greg Moran.  

Wilmslow Wolves responded with a converted try of their own though as they belied their lowly league position with great ball retention and forward drives, to lead 7-3. 

Each side kicked further penalties before lock Sam Gibson wandered over following excellent support work. Liam McGovern converted to see the Hillmen lead 13-10. 

Wilmslow battled back though with a penalty of their own to tie it at 13 all. In the first half , Glossop’s number 9 Jon Tennant and the home side’s number 3 spent 10 minutes in the sin bin following a bout of handbags and Lewis Winterbottom received 10 minutes too in the second half as the game remained close and fractious. 

McGovern eased Glossop’s nerves with two further penalties to push Glossop into a  19-13 lead. 

Tennant then made up for his earlier misdemeanour with a great try after clinical inter passing with wing Chris Sonczak. This gave Glossop a 24-13 advantage as they eventually began to make  their superiority tell.

The Derbyshire side were now attacking at will and speedster Elliott Caine flew in for Glossop’s third try to make it 29-13 to Glossop. Soon after, it looked like Mat Sonczak would get Glossop a bonus point with a fourth try but as he sped in on the right wing, a stunning tackle from the Wilmslow 14 saw him chopped down just inches short. The plucky young Wolves side got the last try of the match, under the posts and converted to leave a final score of Wilmslow 20 Glossop 29.

In related news, the Glossop Amazones made the trip to Audenshaw Park on Sunay and returned with a big victory, having overcome Aldwinians Ladies 29-0.

The result made it three wins from three for the Hargate Hill outfit.

Glossop return to Hargate Hill on Saturday and host Altrincham Kersal in the Regional Two North West.
