Hillmen back to winning ways

Glossop North End got back to winning ways on Saturday with a statement win at home to high-flyers Padiham.

The Hillmen got the better of their second placed visitors thanks to a Jacques Etia strike and two Jordan Schofield spot kicks, coming out on top in an afternoon packed with drama.

The Hillmen went ahead on 17 minutes as Schofield held his nerve from 12 yards, but the visitors were back level in a matter of seconds as the despairing Dylan McMahon turned into his own net to restore parity.

Jacques Etia then fired in on the stroke of half-time to restore GNE’s lead, before a moment of madness midway through the second period compounded the visitors’ misery.

With Ethan Sutcliffe bearing down on goal, Padiham stopper Brad Sullivan clattered into the forward resulting in his dismissal, with Schofield once again staying composed from the spot to give Lee Wilshaw’s side a two-goal lead.

From there, the home side managed to see the game out and record their first league win of 2026.

“It was a great win,” said Wilshaw when asked on his thoughts at full-time.

“It was a gritty one, one that we really had to work for.

“There wasn’t a lot of quality in the game, but when we were in the ascendancy, we managed to finish chances, and fortunately, they didn’t.”
