Hatton boxing dynasty produces another champ

Another promising boxer has rolled off the Hatton family production line, with the latest youngster winning National Youth Championships gold.

Jack Hatton, the son of former European Welterweight champion, Matthew, beat Torbay fighter Leroy Alfred in the 51-54kg Cadet division to claim his second English junior title.

Hatton, a southpaw, forced his Devonian opponent into taking three standing counts on his way to victory last weekend.

“My goal is to compete for my country,” the youngest of the Hatton clan said. “So hopefully that can happen in the future.

“It was a national final, so I was nervous before the bout, but it’s just about keeping it together, keeping your shape and using all that you’ve learned in your training.

“It’s brilliant to have my dad who’s got a lot of experience in boxing, and my Uncle Ricky boxed at the top level, so I’ve just got to take everything on board that they tell me, learn off them, and it’ll make me a much better fighter.

“It’s not just my dad and my Uncle Ricky; everyone plays a big part. I’ve got my coach Danny Benson and Steve Buckley and everyone else at the club is dead supportive, spurring me on to do the best I can.”

As well as his dad, Jack follows in the footsteps of his cousin Campbell – who has a pro record of 14 wins and 2 defeats - and his famed two-weight world champion uncle, who said in an Instagram post: “Very proud of our @jackhatton08 today as he became the National Youth Champion, winning his title against a very talented lad.

“Three standing counts scored but his opponent stayed in there. Great fight. He’ll be back. Good kid. Proud of you Jack. Uncle Richard X.”
