Hat trick of wins for The Asp

Glossop resident Nathan Aspinall picked up his third European Tour win of the year over the weekend, adding the German Darts Championship to his collection after victory in Hildesheim.

After a tense battle with Dirk van Duijvenbode in the final, which saw the Dutchman claw his way back level from 6-2 down, ‘The Asp’ reeled off the last two legs to make it a hat trick of trophies for 2025.

The 34-year-old’s path to the final saw him ease past Steve Lennon on finals day with a remarkable 110 average, before seeing off Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena in the quarter-finals.

The Dinting resident then had to come from 6-3 down in a race to seven to overcome yet another Dutchman in Gian van Veen with a stellar semi-final performance.

Victory in Germany means Aspinall joins Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Luke Humphries and Dave Chisnall as only the fifth player to win three European Tour titles in the same calendar year.

“I’m in very good company,” said Aspinall following the win.

“These are very, very tough days. It took me 10 years to win my first one, but I’ve found the formula now.”

The triumph caps off a superb month for the Stockport born star, who hit two nine-dart finishes in the same day on his way to last week’s Players Championship 31 final.

‘The Asp’ will return to Germany this weekend for the European Championship in Dortmund, where the number one seed will take on Rob Cross in the first round.
