Tuesday night saw the return of the annual Tony Downes memorial match, with Droylsden taking on Glossop North End at The Butcher’s Arms.
A 4-1 win on the night saw The Hillmen lift the Tony Downes memorial trophy, named in honour of Droylsden Guardsman Neil ‘Tony’ Downes, who tragically lost his life in Afghanistan back in 2007.
The visitors found themselves two up at half-time thanks to penalties from Lewis Reilly and Ethan Sutcliffe before the returning Caelan Kilheeney pulled one back for The Bloods with a spotkick of his own.
New signing Sutcliffe then restored his side’s two goal cushion with a stunning solo goal, before Ollie McKay turned home from close range to seal the win.
Both sides begin their North West Counties campaigns later this month, with Droylsden kicking off with a home match against AFC Blackpool, while Glossop host new boys City of Liverpool, who were relegated from the NPL West last season.
