As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and this was the case on Tuesday as St Helens put a stop to Glossop North End's five game winning streak.
Despite another positive performance, The Hillmen fell to a 3-1 defeat at the Asgard Engineering Stadium, having ended the match with 10 men and an outfielder in goal.
Lee Wilshaw’s side went ahead initially, with Curzon loanee Harry Olufowobi opening his Glossop account with 20 minutes on the clock, but the visitors St Helens would draw level on the stroke of half time through Mackenzie O’Neill.
The hosts had the pick of the chances in the second half, with Dylan Switters skying his effort over from a matter of yards out, before Conal Gallagher saw his looping volley tipped over, but a moment of madness 15 minutes from time flipped the match on its head.
After GNE goalkeeper Harry Allen flew off his line and cleaned out the St Helens attacker, he saw red, and with no keeper on the bench, Switters was forced to go between the sticks.
From there, the home side were on the back foot, and the Stripes’ pressure told two minutes from time when O’Neill turned in his second of the evening, before an own goal from Jordan Schofield compounded Glossop’s misery.
“A game of two halves is a frequent saying, but it was,” Wilshaw told the Chronicle following the defeat.
“We were dominant in the first half, brave in possession, and got a fair few shots off - if more of them go in we’re going into half time comfortable.
“Them scoring before half time made it difficult, and we reacted well, but it does knock the wind out of your sales a little bit.”
