Glossop golfer takes over Alliance captaincy

Gary Brown, of Glossop Golf Club, has been honoured with the captaincy of the Manchester and District Golf Alliance for the 2020-21 season, the first time any professional from the club has held this prestigious position.

Gary was chosen by the Alliance Committee in recognition of his support for the association over the years which began back in 1984 when he was first appointed as an assistant professional at the age of 16 and represented the Alliance in inter club competitions, remembering with fondness his first match at Dunscar Golf Club in Bolton.

The Alliance was formed in 1924 and is recognised as the oldest golfing alliance in the country, boasting a membership today of 114 affiliated clubs taken across the board from Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire.

As captain, Gary intends to build on the principles of the association whose motto is ‘Friendship Through Golf.’

His aim is to continue to foster what has become a golfing family environment over the years and is looking forward to the Pro-Am events that are held every Wednesday throughout the winter months which are always so well supported by golfers from around the region.

The Alliance is renowned for running some of the best inter club competitions around, the pick of which being the Dunham Forest trophy for scratch golfers, a competition that is also the largest in the country and one that Glossop has always supported over the years.

As Glossop’s professional, Gary has brought with him a wealth of experience gained from working and playing around Europe, which is benefiting members to the point where his services are in constant demand.

In addition to this, his appointment as Alliance Captain means that Gary will be facing a busy year, but he is confident that with the support of golfers from Glossop and Alliance clubs around the north west that this year will become one of the highlights in his golfing career.
