Former Ashton United captain Michael Brewster has become the first signing of the new era at Stalybridge Celtic Football Club.

The midfielder began his career at Oldham Athletic's academy before representing FC United of Manchester, St Mirren, Southport and Skelmersdale, prior to joining Atherton Collieries.

In 2019, he followed then manager Michael Clegg to Ashton United, where he made 87 appearances before leaving earlier this year.

Brewster arrives at Bower Fold after departing Radcliffe Borough, where he spent the second half of last season.

After making the move to Celtic, he told the club's media team: “It’s an exciting time for the club, fans and community with new ownership, a new manager and a fresh start to shape a new season.

“I’ve played against Stalybridge many times over the years, some of which in local derbies, and the fans have always travelled in numbers! I was looking for a local club to play my football for the coming season and, after speaking to the manager and hearing the plans, it just made sense!

“I’m excited to get going, to meet the team the manager assembles and help work towards getting this club back where it should be. I can’t wait to meet the people around the club, the fans and generally getting back to work on the grass!”

Celtic's new manager James Kinsey added: “Michael is exactly the type of player that we want to bring to the club. He will run through brick walls for us and he’ll have extremely high demands from everybody. He’s 27 so his best years are about to come and we’re delighted he’s chosen us!”
