Five Star Oldham Produce Big Win

Oldham Athletic produced a stunning performance as they hit five goals against Newport County at Boundary Park with a 5-0 win.

It comes after Oldham Athletic have been served with a winding-up petition over unpaid taxes. The League Two side have been summoned to the High Court on 18 March after a claim by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Oldham dominated the game from the start and were almost ahead after just four minutes as Jonny Smith crossed in towards the in-form Zak Dearnley but his header rebounded off the post.

The Latics were 1-0 up after 25 minutes as Danny Rowe got his first goal at Boundary Park since his move from Fylde in January. The striker latched onto the ball in the box and took it around the keeper to toe-poke it home.

Two minutes later, Latics doubled their lead, after a brilliantly worked move. Rowe sent Borthwick-Jackson away down the left flank, and the fullback’s cross was turned home by Dearnley for his third goal in two games.

That took Oldham into the second-half and they continued to dominate the game and on the 52nd minute, Oldham had their third. Gevaro Nepomuceno crossed into the box and Rowe controlled the ball and turned the defender to slot the ball under the keeper for his brace.

In the 62nd minute, it was looking like Oldham weren’t going to stop after they got their fourth goal. Smith played the ball to Tom Hamer who drove into the box and his shot deflected and looped over the keeper in rather fortunate circumstances but he won't care.

Oldham sealed the big win with their fifth goal in the 82nd minute as Jonny Smith got in on the action. He drove down the right-hand side and sent a low shot into the far corner with his weak foot.

A big win for Oldham after an uncertain week lifts them up to 17th in the table.

After the game Oldham boss Dino Maamria said:

"It was a big day for us and we showed what we're all about. It was very good for our fans, especially those 500 last weekend who followed us last weekend to Orient.

"I think it's brilliant for everybody but the credit must go to the players as it's been a difficult week especially with the weather finding a place to train.

"I thought we were outstanding and well done to everyone connected to the club. From the ground staff, to the coaching staff, to the office staff to every player."
