FC Glossop pick up title in debut season

A local Sunday League side are celebrating an impressive league title win.

FC Glossop were founded last year by a group of friends, and they have already managed to pick up silverware in their debut season.

The club secured the Hyde, Oldham & District Sunday Football League title with two games to spare, defeating title rivals The Oxford FC on April 20, before winning their final two matches to end the campaign with a 100% record.

The Glossop based side went the entire season unbeaten, winning all 22 games and finishing on 66 points, with a whopping 125 goal difference.

Standout victories include a 17-1 thrashing of Newton Heath Athletic in December, as well as a 14-1 thumping of Mossley JFC 2nd’s in September.

Following the league win, Adam Ashton, FC Glossop’s manager and chairman commented:

“We founded the club last year as there was a lack of Sunday league teams in the area.

“After losing our first few games in pre-season we managed to turn it around and ended the season undefeated in the league.

“We were quite unlucky in the cup competitions, exiting the Derbyshire County Cup after a tight game which finished 2-1 against the eventual winners, before reaching the semi-final of the Challenge Cup only to be knocked out on penalties against higher division opposition.

“So all in all it’s not been a bad first season as a club!

“It has been that much of a success that we have now expanded and created a second team, and so we are still on the lookout for extra players.

“If anyone fancies trying out, they can give our club page a message on Facebook - FC Glossop.”
