A martial arts club in Glossop are celebrating yet another successful year at the WKC (World Karate & Kickboxing Commission) World Championships.
Four athletes from Hadfield based club Evolution Martial Arts, who represented the English National team at last week’s event in Niagara Falls, returned from the US with a whopping 14 medals between them.
Club owner and now 23-time World Champion Kelly Buxton added another three world titles to her staggering collection, as well as a bronze medal to round off a superb week.
Another stand out performer was 9-year-old Blake Webster, who picked up a world title and four bronze medals in his debut event, with fellow debutant Ole Taylor, 11, also coming home with a world title and a bronze medal of his own.
Finally, 12-year-old Demi-Leigh Walsh built on a stellar performance in last year’s event in Portugal - where she won five medals - adding another three bronze medals to her collection.
Speaking following the tournament, Kelly told the Chronicle:
“I am super proud of my team, the kids have worked hard showing true dedication and determination not just in the 12 week fight camp in the run up to the championships but in the years of training they have already put in at such young ages, and I have no doubt that their success will continue.
“I’d like to thank the local businesses who donated prizes for raffles and fundraising events, and also the following companies who sponsored our team: Harrison & Hinchliffe, Wienerberger, Fairway Motors, MBC Building Contractor, Mast Property Group Ltd, Up North Print, Harlequin Beauty, JW Design and Leonardo Hotels – without them we wouldn’t have been able to get there.”
Evolution Martial Arts, who recently celebrated their 11-year anniversary, offer classes for ages 3+ all the way up to adults.
The club also offer ladies only classes, meaning there is something for everyone six days a week.
