England Net Seven But Game Spoilt By Booing

England secured their place at Euro 2020 last night with a 7-0 win over Montenegro at Wembley, but the result was soured by the England fans who booed Liverpool player Joe Gomez who came off the bench. 

This came after Raheem Sterling was dropped for the game after he was involved with an altercation with Gomez as tensions grew following Manchester City’s 3-1 loss away at Liverpool. 

In the game, Harry Kane scored a hat-trick as England won a convincing qualifier at Wembley in the nations 1000th game which also makes England the first country to achieve this number of games.

Sterling has since apologised for his actions and England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed he will start Sunday's final Euro 2020 qualifier in Kosovo.

After the game Raheem Sterling came to Gomez’s defence as he wrote on Twitter: 

'To all the England fans, I wanted to leave things at it was but tonight I have to speak again: it was hard for me to see my teammate get booed for something that was my fault. 

'Joe hasn't done anything wrong & for me to see someone who keeps his head down and work hard especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong. 

'I've taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence. I felt as though I had to say this get home safe everyone.'

England manager Gareth Southgate said he was sad to see the reaction to Gomez's introduction in the second half against Montenegro.

"I am hugely disappointed for Joe," he said.

"Joe had done nothing wrong and no England player should be booed like that when they are wearing the shirt.

"All the players are particularly disappointed with that."
