Droylsden Dragons impress in debut campaign

Droylsden Cricket Club’s new women’s side are celebrating a successful debut campaign.

Despite only forming at the start of the year, Droylsden Dragons managed a fourth-place finish in their first ever GMCL Women’s South East Softball League season.

Many of the players hadn’t picked up a bat prior to joining the Dragons, but this didn’t stop them from competing with some well-established sides.

They have become the latest Tameside club to have a team enter the division, joining local rivals Stayley, Dukinfield, and Flowery Field.

“Throughout the season our skill and abilities in the sport have soared,” Droylsden Dragons captain Cath Jeffers told the Reporter.

“We formed in January, and interest was high right from the start, with a high number of females signing up and attending training sessions which commenced in April.

“We managed to win a number of games and compete against other female teams from across the area, teams that have been established far longer than the Dragons, but this didn’t phase the players in any way.

“The camaraderie, the passion to develop and most importantly, the fun and enjoyment has brought about a real togetherness and friendship in the team, and the consensus from all the players that female cricket at Droylsden Cricket Club is here to stay.”

The club are always looking for new players, so if you would like to get involved, make contact via Facebook at Droylsden Cricket Club or through the website: https://droylsdencc.co.uk

The club are also hosting a ladies cricket festival next month, with the hope to inspire even more local women to get involved in the sport.

This is set to take place on September 7, with a total of 12 teams taking part.
